Starting with today, 1st of September, anyone can take the train for free on the Spanish territory.

The Royal Decree regarding the measures of economic sustainability in the field of transports was approved in August and offers 100% of the money back for train travel. According to the spokesperson of the Government, Isabel Rodriguez, this measure will cost Spain around 200 million euros.

In order to beneficiate of this price reduction, the Spanish citizen need to register on Renfe’s (Spanish National Rail Network) website with their National Identity Document (DNI) number.

The Pass can be bought by paying a guarantee fee:

-20€ for medium distances, which means a regional route between 60 and 300 kilometers;

-10€ for close distances, urban routes;

At the end of this period, the fee will be reinstated to those who can prove that they are frequent train users and have travelled at least 16 times.

What does this mean exactly? If a citizen needs to travel frequently on a medium distance route, from point A to B, he/she can buy the Pass for 20€ and travel on that route. On 31.12.2022, if that person has travelled at least 16 times on that specific route, he/she will get back the 20€ fee paid. If not, the fee is considered as a compensation paid towards Renfe.

For close distances, the same rule of 16 trips apply, as well.

With this measure, the Government wishes to encourage its citizens to use the train more often and it will help families save up to 600€ from the 1st of September until the end of the year, depending on the number of members.
